Things You'll Need:

  • Soft Tools - used to open the case without scratching (available at www.ipodrepairsquad.com)
  • T6 Torx Screw Driver
  • Long Nose Pliers (optional)
  • ESD Bracelet

Step 1:
Preparing to Open the Case • Make sure it's on hold. ( You should see orange on the hold switch) • It's best to start from the side. (Be careful around the hold switch and headphone jack)

Step 2:
Opening the Case • It's easier if you use one soft tool to hold the gap open and then wedge another one in there to work your way side to side. • There are several clips holding the frame in place so gently pry up and down while you are moving side to side. • Use a soft Tool to gently pry up on the cable. It helps to use a wiggling motion

Step 3:
Remove the Headphone Plug • Once its open you will need to remove the plug that is attached to the headphone jack on the logic board. (See the orange cable on the left)

Step 4:
Remove the Hard Drive • Grasp the Hard Drive firmly with one hand and grab the IDE cable with your other hand as shown. Wiggle the IDE cable out but don't bend the pins at all. Once you disconnect the IDE cable you can simply lift the HD out.

Step 5:
• Once the Hard Drive is out you may see some black tape covering the HD connector on the logic board. If you are replacing the Hard Drive you don't need to remove this tape, you can simply attach the new Hard Drive.

Step 6:
• The HD IDE cable is held in place by the black latch shown above. Using your soft tool you can simply flip the latch up.

Step 7:
• Now the HD IDE cable can be removed and replaced if need be. Be sure to check the cable and make sure there aren't any nicks or holes. Also the tip should be a shiny brass color. When reconnecting make sure you have a snug connection and then push the latch back into place.

Step 8:
• Here you can see the battery plug. • Grasp with your fingers, or long nose pliers and wiggle free. Pull on the connector and not the wires. Also be sure not to pull on the logic board too much while trying to free it.

Step 9:
Remove the 2 T6 Screws • This is where the screws are located. In this pic they have already been removed.

Step 10:
Lift the Battery Free • Lift the battery free. It may be attached with some adhesive so use a soft tool to hold down the edge of the logic board near the battery plug while you gently pry the battery loose.

Step 11:
• Bring the wires under logic board as shown and replace the battery if you need to.

Step 12:
Removing 4 T6 screws • Once these screws are removed the logic board will be free except for the LCD and the ClickWheel.

Step 13:
Remove the IDE LCD Cable • Flip the black latch up like you did with the HD IDE cable. • At this point you can remove the IDE cable.

Step 14:
• You can lift up the logic board and replace the LCD at this point without removing the clickwheel.

Step 15:
We didn't cover replacing the clickwheel in this guide but it is as simple as flipping the black latch(pictured) and removing the cable.

Step 16:
Go in reverse order to insert a replacement part. This is the End of our Guide. If you feel we left something out or wish to request more information please contact us at www.ipodrepairsquad.com or 1-888-IPOD-FIX
